Aaron Draplin

Tall Tales from a Large Man. That’s right. The design world’s own Paul Bunyan is cutting a swath through Central PA. Aaron Draplin of Draplin Design Co. pulls no punches in a talk that takes you on a journey through a ferociously independent career. This talk is for the hardy of heart (or those who aspire to be). Get ready to be inspired to cut the crap and do great work.

Hailing from the mighty Pacific Northwest, Aaron proudly rolls up his sleeves on a number of projects related to Print, Identity, Web Development, Illustration and Gocco Muscle categories. He’s designed stuff for Nike, Wired, Timberline, Ford Motor Co., Burton Snowboards and the Obama Administration just to name a few. In addition, Draplin Design Co. is the driving force behind the popular Field Notes notebook brand.

DDC’s motto is “Work hard and do good work for good people.” This is no more evident than in Draplin’s bold and iconic work. His designs are rooted in the spirit and style of the sturdy and hard working American Midwest.
Aaron has spoken at the AIGA National Conference, TEDxPortland, How Design Conference and just about every AIGA chapter across the country. He’s been profiled in Communication Arts, Design Matters with Debbie Millman, How Magazine and The Great Discontent. If you’ve attended or seen any of these you know that we’re in for one hell of a night.

1:00pm – Workshop: Graphic Treasures from the American Underbelly

In a faster and faster design world, our inspiration sources oddly seem to be spiraling into the same predictable, tired sources. Sometimes you have to look all the way back to see where we came from, and to be reminded of the incredible work our founders made. Get dirty with Aaron Draplin and learn how to find incredible graphic treasures. See vivid examples, techniques, and spirited hotspots. Learn how to use them in your work with color, form, and typography, and ultimately, how to save American design from its bad self.
